Cork Thornton Memorial Ice Fishing Tournament
Date: January 24 - 25, 2009
The tournament usually draws over 65, two person teams from all over Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, and Iowa and as far away as Missouri. It is the only ice fishing tournament that pays 100 percent of the entry fees back to the top 20 places. The top prize goes to the team with the most pounds of fish. There are also prizes for largest fish in several species including: bass, bluegill, perch and crappie. Cork Thornton was an avid local ice fisherman who died in an auto accident.

Valentine's Day

It is only natural that activities pick up around Valentines Day in the Heart City and surrounding area. Each year several couples make plans to get married in the Heart City on Valentines Day. The Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Chili Cook-Off and Chocolate Lovers experience. It might be chocolate cookies or a chocolate mousse; it all comes together on Valentines Day in Valentine. Restaurants feature heart shaped steaks and local motels feature hot tub suites. Treat your sweetheart to a special Valentines Day in the Heart City.
HeartCity Bull Bash

This Bull Bash event is unique in the fact that it is designed to say “Thank You” to the beef breeders and seedstock producers who allow us to share in their rich heritage and passion for the livestock industry.
Each year over 50 pens of bulls, and stallions, commercial exhibits and as always a full day of fun for the family, great food and fellowship. We’ll roll out the hospitality and you must come and celebrate with us!

1884 Days
Date: April 25, 2009
Valentine was Founded in 1884, thus the 1884 Days theme. Valentine began as a few log cabins on the end of the railroad track. It was named after popular Congressman E. K. Valentine, who was a voice for Nebraska settlers and their grievances in Washington DC. Each year late in April, the residents of the community celebrate its founding with several special activities. These events include a period costume contest, beard contest, bean cook off and dance. Businesses also feature unique 1884 Days bargains and specials in their stores.
Circle C Day

On Saturday of Each Memorial Day weekend the Village of Cody hosts the annual Circle C activities. The activities include the dance, rodeo, Little Miss and Mr. Circle C, softball game, BBQ, kids games, and parade. This group is a combination of community members, and is open to anyone who would like to join. The day is filled with numerous activities for the entire family and is meant to be a wholesome old fashioned celebration of the Sandhills region.
Nebraska Star Party

The astronomical views from Merritt Reservoir's Snake Campground are fabulous, and there are plenty of recreational opportunities to keep the entire family entertained all week long at the annual Nebraska Star Party.
For newcomers, NSP is the perfect place to become acquainted with the wonders the heavens. For youngsters, they've added even more educational value to the experience of camping beneath the stars with short evening classes in addition to an expanded kids' afternoon program midweek.

Cherry County Fair and Rodeo

Each year in the middle of August, the Cherry County Fair and Rodeo celebrates a year of hard work, and the end of summer. 4-H youth projects range from scrap booking and photography to showing 1200 pound beef animals and small kittens. Neighbors gather on the carnival midway to visit and share a funnel cake after the rodeo performance. A trade show, featuring items used in the home and on the ranch entice visitors to imagine things that might be. Kids enjoy sharing their experiences over the summer with friends and family during this special time before school resumes. The action of the rodeo arena includes the ranch rodeo recognizing working cowboys and cowgirls who excel at their chosen trade. No one is a stranger when they come to the Cherry County Fair and Rodeo.
Old Settler Reunion

For over 120 years residents of the area have been gathering at Sparks, Nebraska for the annual Old Settlers Reunion on the last Saturday in August. This old fashioned family event features foot races, egg toss, slipper kicking contest, amateur rodeo, horse races cattle penning and a bowery dance under the stars sometimes lasting until the wee hours of the morning. A small admission at the gate is all it takes to enjoy the entire day’s events. The event celebrates the roots of the community with family members returning year after year to visit with old friends and make new ones.

Every year, in the fall, we all gather together in Valentine to celebrate the time honored traditions of our childhood hero's - The American Cowboy! We have poets, muscians and story tellers from all over our country come to share their talents. They tell stories of the days of yester-year and of times when cowboys were kings! You can almost hear the spurs jingling and the old camp cook calling in the riders to a hot meal of biscuits, beans and boiled coffee.
Not only do we hear of historic days of old but they also tell of the contemporary western way of life we still live today. So come to Valentine Nebraska in October to mingle shoulder to shoulder with modern day cowboys, ranchers and craftsmen.
